Mater Dei Prep Community Celebrates Super Seraph Weekend

On September 21-22, 2018 the Mater Dei Prep community was proud to celebrate the annual Super Seraph Weekend and Oktoberfest Craft Show & Food Truck Festival.

To kick off Super Seraph Weekend the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame Class of 2018 was honored in front of a sellout crowd on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck, New Jersey. The Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame honors members of the Seraph community for their extraordinary co-curricular accomplishments, distinguished achievement in their respective fields, extraordinary service and support of their alma mater, and team state championships. The Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame Class of 2018 included nine deserving individuals and one school championship team. This year the inductees represented alumni from the class of 1972 to 2008 and honorable community volunteers.

Mater Dei Prep was proud to honor Cindy Dwyer, Ryan Lino MDP’07, Donald E. Froude MDP’74 – Lifetime Achievement, Dr. Joseph Buzzanco MDP ’78 P’13,’16 – Extraordinary Service, Maria Buzzanco P’13,’16 – Extraordinary Service, Cathy Daniels MDP’79 – Extraordinary Service, Kathryn McLaughlin MDP’72 – Extraordinary Service, Ellen Poole MDP’72 – Extraordinary Service, Bill Dickinson P’77,’78,’81,’83,’84,’86, and the 2008 Mater Dei Prep State Championship Varsity Softball Team on their induction into the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame.

On Saturday, September 22, 2018 Mater Dei Prep held numerous alumni affinity events throughout the day that included The Attridge-Tursi Run, Cross Country Affinity Event, Alumni Soccer Game, and Soccer Affinity Event. The alumni affinity events connected Mater Dei Prep alumni, parents, and current players together to share stories of their playing days and discuss the bright future of each program.

The Oktoberfest Craft Show & Food Truck Festival was a great success thanks to parent and student volunteers, the Mater Dei Prep PTO, Seraph alumni, all of the vendors and sponsors, and the wonderful musical performances. Some of the amazing food trucks included Cubano Xpress and Empanada Guy. The festival also featured a beer garden, whiskey tasting and a wine tasting for those patrons over 21. Families were also able to enjoy games and activities in the fun filled children’s tent run by the Saint Mary School PTO. The music entrainment for Oktoberfest was kicked off by Andrew Lobby and was followed by Malibu with Ray Laux MDP‘17, Shuffle, Chip Robertson MDP’78, and Joe Rapolla ‘MDP79. All the musical performances truly rocked the festival.

Mater Dei Prep also had large crowds at the football and girls’ soccer games. The Lady Seraphs soccer team played a hard fought game but came up just short by a score of 4-2 vs Matawan High School. The Seraphs football team defeated Shore Regional High School by a score of 36-8. At halftime of the football game, the recent inductees to the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame were honored in front of family and friends. The entire Mater Dei Prep community came out in full force and showed off their Seraph pride.

Additionally, Saturday featured a Mass of Remembrance at the St. Mary Chapel, to remember all those from the Mater Dei Prep community who have passed. Mater Dei Prep also hosted its Super Seraph Milestone Reunion for all members from the classes ending in 3 or 8. The classes had their own fun filled tent and celebrated their lifelong bond with fellow classmates. It was a wonderful experience seeing the large number of fellow Seraphs back on campus connecting with old friends.

"Super Seraph Weekend and Oktoberfest have grown to become our most anticipated and inclusive Mater Dei community events. The Hall of Fame ceremony set the stage for family warmth, goodwill, and celebration all weekend long. Everything about the weekend was inspiring and was an indication for greater things to come throughout academic year. Seraph Proud and Seraph Strong says it all,” said Steve Andersen, Mater Dei Prep Associate Head of School.

A very special thank you goes out to all the sponsors that helped make this day possible. Sponsors include Century 21 Realtor: Maureen Yetman, Joseph T. Buzzanco, D.M.D, Saker ShopRites, Cuozzo Orthodontics, Holmdel Buy-Rite Wines & Liquors, Super Foodtown Circus Fresh Foods, Solari Creative, and Gloria Nilson Realtor: Donna Lino.
