Mater Dei Prep Launches Emergency Medical Services & Nursing Institute
Mater Dei Prep has recently launched four new academic institutes – the Global Leaders Institute, Information Technology Institute, Performing Arts Institute and the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute to kick off the 2018-2018 school year. Each Institute is designed to teach students the skills needed to excel in today’s diverse, technology-based fields through hands-on learning.
The Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute is a new innovative academic program that has approximately 180 students registered. The coursework featured in the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute prepares students for further healthcare training and education as well as teaching them important life skills. Students will complete their Emergency Medical Response certification, learning critical lifesaving skills that will benefit both themselves and the community. Students interested in pursuing this track will advance through the curriculum which includes Health/Emergency Medical Response, Dynamics in Health Care, Anatomy and Physiology, and Emergency Medical Technician.
“What I am most excited about is the fact that this impactful curriculum and training is finally being offered at schools. It is incredible that all Mater Dei Prep students will have their EMR.” said John Hansen, co-director of the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute.
“Students are learning important lessons that will help them in their day to day life. We stress teaching with a hands-on approach so that students can practice these lifesaving skills to help others,” explained Elaine Caldera, co-director of the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute.
For the exciting opening week of the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute students learned how to properly take people on and off a stretcher. Students also had the opportunity to learn the correct method of taking each other’s blood pressure and pulse. Mr. Hansen and Mrs. Caldera also covered important medical, legal, and ethical issues in emergency medical situations.
Brooke Luchina MDP’21 is a student in the program and described the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute as “not like a normal class, because we are constantly moving around and learning practical lessons in a fun, hands-on environment.”
Isaiah Walton MDP’20 knows the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing courses will position him for both collegiate and professional success. “My goal is to be a doctor, so this class is perfect for me to receive the foundation needed to understand the field,” said Isaiah Walton.
