Mater Dei Prep Hosts 3rd Annual Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge
On January 27-28, 2018, Mater Dei Prep was proud to continue the school's tradition of service by hosting the 3rd annual Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge. This year the Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge was played on the Mater Dei Prep campus in Memorial Hall. All proceeds from the event supported The Valerie Fund, a nonprofit organization that provides support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders.
The Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge has been sponsored by Mater Dei Prep for the past three years and was introduced by Ben Gamble, Mater Dei Prep Head Basketball Coach. Coach Gamble became aware of The Valerie Fund through an acquaintance whose child suffered from sickle cell anemia. The child “lived well past his projected life span due to the care of the people at the Valerie Fund,” said Coach Gamble. “I am proud that Mater Dei Prep is building on our successful event and leading the mission to help children with pediatric cancer and other blood disorders. I would also like to thank all the participating schools and sponsors for giving back to this great cause.”
Mater Dei Prep was fortunate to have some of the top boys’ and girls’ high school basketball programs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania compete in the challenge this year. Mater Dei Prep would like to thank the boys’ basketball programs at Don Bosco Prep, Newark West Side, The Hun School, Wayne Hills, St. Mary’s (Elizabeth), Hackensack, St. Peter’s Prep, Middletown North, Carteret, Conwell Egan (Pennsylvania), Rutgers Prep, Bergen Catholic, Newark Central, West Catholic (Pennsylvania), Gill St. Bernard’s School, Lincoln (Jersey City), and the girls’ basketball program at Middletown North for supporting the 2018 Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge.
Mater Dei Prep continually instills an attitude of service and commitment to the community in all their students. Lance Bennett, Mater Dei Prep Athletic Director, said “I would like to commend Coach Gamble for organizing such a positive and impactful event. It was an honor for Mater Dei Prep to host so many talented programs at the Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge while supporting such a wonderful cause.”
The success of the Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge can be contributed to the support of the amazing volunteers and sponsors. Mater Dei Prep extends a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers that made the Valerie Fund Basketball Challenge possible and to Professional Orthopaedic Associates and Matawan Physical Therapy for sponsoring the amazing event.
