Mater Dei Prep to Honor Dr. John Checton and Mr. Kevin Cummings at Seraph Strong Gala
On Saturday, Feb. 10, Mater Dei Prep will hold the Seraph Strong Gala, at Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury. The annual Seraph Strong Gala is Mater Dei Prep’s signature event to honor alumni, community leaders and others who support Mater Dei Prep’s mission. As the largest fundraiser of the year, the gala enables Mater Dei Prep to continue its tradition of excellence in education and commitment to Catholic values. This year’s event honors Dr. John Checton (MD ’70), Director of Cardiology at Monmouth Medical Center, and Mr. Kevin Cummings, CEO and President of Investors Bancorp.
During his tenure at Monmouth Medical Center, Dr. Checton has held numerous leadership roles, including director of both its noninvasive cardiac and cardiac catheterization laboratories, and served as section chief of the Department of Cardiology for more than 30 years. Dr. Checton was instrumental in driving Monmouth Medical Center’s development as a center of excellence in cardiac care, and in Monmouth Medical Center’s participation in a national research trial (C-PORT) that allowed select community hospitals to perform elective balloon angioplasty. He is also an attending physician at Jersey Shore University and CentraState medical centers. Dr. Checton is board certified in internal medicine, and has subspecialty certifications in cardiovascular disease and critical care medicine. He is counted among less than 5,000 U.S. physicians skilled and board certified in nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular computed tomography.
A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, Dr. Checton is recognized as one of the region’s leading cardiologists. Dr. Checton and his wife Maria have four children (Meghan, Stephanie, Tara and John), three sons-in-law, and three grandchildren.
As president and CEO of Investors Bank, Kevin Cummings’ connection to Mater Dei Prep has been instrumental to Mater Dei Prep’s stability and growth. His commitment to Mater Dei Prep’s mission has supported efforts on many levels, from transportation for students to the renovation of the new math and technology lab.
Prior to joining Investors Bank, Mr. Cummings had a 26-year career with KPMG LLP, where he became a CPA and partner. He was an audit partner in the Financial Services practice in the New York office and lead partner on a major commercial banking client. Mr. Cummings also worked in the New Jersey community bank practice for over 20 years serving clients such as Summit Bank, Valley National Bank, Provident Bank and Hudson City Bank.
Mr. Cummings and his Executive Management team are guiding Investors’ evolution into a full-service community and commercial bank. The bank’s performance was recognized on Forbes’ “Best Banks in America” list since 2012. In addition, Mr. Cummings received the 2011 Ernst & Young New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year Award for transforming the bank into a growth company.
A graduate of Middlebury College (BS) and Rutgers University School of Business (MBA), Kevin and his wife, Patricia, have four children. In his spare time he has coached youth basketball in his local community, and has served as the Athletic Director of St. Teresa of Avila, Summit, New Jersey.
