Thanks to generous gifts from two alumni, the Donald Froude and Edwin “Skip” McLaughlin Science Center is scheduled to open in the 2018-2019 school year. The extensive renovations will transform the existing labs into cutting-edge learning environments for chemistry and biology.

On Tuesday, November 21st Mater Dei Prep was proud to induct nine members into the National Honor Society (NHS) and nineteen members into the Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society (RKHS). The ceremony took place after Thanksgiving liturgy at Mary, Mother of God Church in Middletown, New Jersey.
On Thursday, November 2nd, twenty seven freshmen members of the Mater Dei Prep Emerging Global Leaders Program attended the DPI/NGO “YOUnited” conference at the United Nations. The conference provided an in-depth look at how youth can affect change through policy and action. Over eight of the Mater Dei Prep students were recognized by the panel and spoke powerfully about the necessary changes needed to address the issues of current times. Other schools in attendance were Tufts University, Fordham University, and Monmouth University.
Congratulations to the Seraphs boys’ cross country team on winning the Non-Public B State Championship. A special congratulations goes out to John Spinelli ‘18 who became Mater Dei Prep’s first individual state champion since 1996 with a time of 16:28. Great job Seraphs!
On Friday, November 10th our Mater Dei Prep students had the privilege of meeting John Callas from NASA. Mr. Callas has worked with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, as project manager of NASA's Mars Exploration Rover project since March 2006.
The Board of Trustees of Mater Dei Prep (MDP) is pleased to announce the appointment of Donald Galante as President of the school. Mr. Galante brings 35 years of management experience to his new role, where he will focus on strategy, development, direct marketing, finance, operations, and community engagement.
On Wednesday, November 8th, Mater Dei Prep senior Ken Jones proudly signed his National Letter of Intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Loyola University in Maryland on a full scholarship.
On Saturday, October 28th the Mater Dei Prep Quiz Bowl team qualified for the National Quiz Bowl tournament in Arlington, Virginia. The Seraphs competed against twenty two other schools at the 2017 Northern New Jersey History Bee & Bowl at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey and finished with a record of 5-2. Mater Dei Prep was one of six teams from the tournament to advance to the prestigious national tournament.
On Wednesday, October 18th, the Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players will participate in the “Hip Hop Goes Broadway” Masterclass with Ms. Margot Gough. Students will study how to move better on stage and learn some of the hottest dance moves in Hip Hop and Jazz Funk. The “Hip Hop Goes Broadway” Masterclass is open to all current students.
On October 14, 2017, all the members from the Seraph Players will be honored by the Middletown Township Cultural & Arts Council at their Anniversary Gala. Congratulations to all the Seraph Players on this remarkable honor. You should all be proud of what you have accomplished.
Mater Dei Prep recently expanded its Board of Trustees, adding three new members – Vincent J. Vigorita M.D., Dorothea Zando Laux, and Don Galante – to the current 10-member board. One inaugural member, Kathryn McLaughlin, will not seek renewal of her seat at the end of her 2-year term.
On Wednesday, September 20th, the Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players will be hosting the first Masterclass of the 2017-2018 school year “Shakespeare and Stage Combat” with Jordan Laroya. Mr. Laroya is a company member of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and a working actor in New York City. The kick-off Masterclass series is open to all current and prospective members of the Seraph Players.
Having the chance to travel coast to coast is most people's dream. Catie Boyle, Mater Dei Prep alum from the Class of 2013, was fortunate to live that dream. This past summer Catie participated in the “Summer by Rail” Amtrak internship journey where she visited 25 cities in 28 days via rail.
Student Ambassadors are leaders who will share their passion and knowledge of Mater Dei Prep to prospective families. They will visit local elementary schools with the enrollment staff, give tours at Open Houses, speak at local parishes, and host shadow visits. To apply you must have a 3.0 GPA and complete the application below.

Congratulations to Mater Dei Prep Coach Mike Tursi on being named the 2017 New Jersey Boys U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Coach of the Year! One boys coach and one girls coach from each state is selected based on their teams’ finishes at their respective state championships, the number of different events in which athletes were qualified, individual championships and how their teams’ performances stack up to previous years. Long-time Mater Dei Prep softball coach and math teacher Jeanne Dickinson has always appreciated numbers. And the numbers associated with her are impressive by anyone’s standards: one state championship; one New Jersey State Coach of the Year; 13 Shore Conference Division titles; and an overall record of 496-291-1.
Mater Dei Prep is proud to announce Mr. Anthony Sherlock as the new boys’ head soccer coach and Mr. Ralph Troisi as the new assistant coach. Mr. Sherlock comes to Mater Dei Prep with a full semi-pro career and a successful season as the middle school head coach at Ranney School in Tinton Falls, NJ. Mr. Ralph Troisi is currently the club president and coach of the Hazlet United Soccer Association and a former member of the Christian Brothers Academy soccer team in Lincroft, NJ.

Members from the Emerging Global Leadership Program at Mater Dei Prep are proud to be partnering with “Pathways to Peace” and other organizations affiliated with the United Nations on a service project to primarily benefit refugees forced into migration.
On Tuesday, June 6, the class of 2017 marked their graduation with a beautiful ceremony at Mary, Mother of God Church in Middletown, New Jersey. Eighty seven graduates were honored at this year’s ceremony and as a collective group received over $12.3 million in merit-based scholarships, which averages $141,380 in scholarships per student.
On June 9-11 and June 16-18, the Stone Church Players proudly present Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare at All Saints’ Memorial Church. Members from the award winning Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players will be playing active roles in the upcoming production. Caecilia Altenburg ’18 will be playing Balthasar and Griffin Cole ’18 will be playing Romeo.

On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Mater Dei Prep continued the tradition of hosting Heavenly Hope Fun Day, a student-run service program for children and young adults with special needs. The project, begun in 2012 by then Mater Dei Prep junior Taralynn Vecchio (MDP ’13), gives the participants a break from their regular routine with a whole day of fun games and activities while bonding with Mater Dei Prep students.

Kevin will be joining the Salve Regina football team and Mia will be joining the Salve Regina womens' ice hockey team. Rajae will be joining the Georgian Court University mens' basketball team. Ladies Night was a big success at the Second Annual Pocketbook Bingo & Gift Auction on Friday, May 5th. Over 200 ladies came out for their chance to win pocketbooks and over 90 gift baskets. A special thank you goes out to Duck Donuts in Middletown, NJ and Nothing Bundt Cakes in Shrewsbury, NJ for donating the delicious desserts!The night would have not been possible without the Mater Dei Prep PTO and Maria Buzzanco, Events Chair. Griffin Cole ‘18 is a rising star in the Mater Dei Prep performing arts program. On April 7, 2017, Griffin was proud to announce that he was chosen to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) Summer Program in London, England. Griffin will join a long list of illustrious actors who have attended RADA including Richard Attenborough, Alan Rickman, and Ralph Fiennes.

The Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players completed another award winning trip to the Bucks County Playhouse Student Theater Festival on Wednesday, April 12. The Seraph Players participated in theater workshops in the morning, and then performed for three adjudicators during two afternoon sessions. The Seraph Players performed scenes from their fall play “Peter and the Starcatcher” and the spring musical, “Cry-Baby the Musical.”
Mater Dei Prep is proud to announce the Seraph Players have received five nominations for the Montclair State University Theatre Night Awards. The Montclair State University Theatre Night Awards goal is to promote and advance the commitment to high quality play production in New Jersey’s secondary schools. The awards honor the accomplishments of individual achievement of both students and educators in the areas of performance, direction, design, and technical theatre, as well as outstanding productions in the following genres: Drama, Comedy, Classical, and New Work.
Mater Dei Prep congratulates junior, Greg Bender, on being selected to play the trombone in the All-Shore Symphonic Band Concert on Saturday, April 1st. Greg was chosen from the best musicians in Ocean and Monmouth County to play in the ensemble at Neptune High School. Acceptance into this ensemble is a high honor and was a fantastic opportunity for Greg and other top musicians to display their musical skills. This year the concert included special guest conductor, Dr. David Vickerman from TCNJ. Great job Greg you have made the Seraph community proud!
On Saturday, May 20, 2017, Mater Dei Prep will support the St. Mary's Athletic Association and The Jersey Shore Running Club 14th Annual Spring Into Summer 5K. All proceeds from this event benefit the Monsignor Bulman Stadium Fund, dedicated to improving the athletic facilities of Mater Dei Prep and Saint Mary School. In addition to the 5K, there is a 1 Mile run/walk as well as a series of races for kids ages 4-12 followed by a BBQ.
To honor Autism Awareness Month, members from the Mater Dei Prep baseball and softball team will take part in the Annual Strike Out Autism Challenge. At its inception twelve years ago, the benefit day, organized by Central Regional High School’s Autism Awareness Club, included only baseball teams, but two years ago it was expanded to local softball teams.
Mater Dei Prep is excited to announce the partnership with Chris Cho from Cho Educators. As a collegiate preparatory high school, one of Mater Dei Prep’s goals is to prepare students to get into the college of their choice; an important piece is SAT preparation. This newly formed partnership with Cho Educators will broaden the entire Mater Dei Prep’s teaching staff’s understanding of the SAT by gaining strategies across the different curriculum areas to support students’ skills set. These methods will be integrated into the learning curriculum of every classroom.
On Thursday, March 16, 2017, senior Jennifer Quigley received the Monmouth County Guidance Directors’ Caring Award. Jennifer was nominated to represent Mater Dei Prep by Director of Student Services, Mr. Phil Masterson, for showing exceptional caring and compassion for a cause, group, or program during her high school career. The ceremony took place at Brookdale Community College with other recipients from public and private schools throughout Monmouth County.
Congratulations to Mater Dei Prep senior Faith Reash on signing her National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and soccer career at Edinboro University. This past season Faith was a team captain for the Lady Seraphs and led the team in scoring. Great job Faith you have made the Seraph community very proud!

On March 2, 2017, senior Patrik Halecki was honored to attend a Conference at the United Nations that addressed Pope Francis’s message for the celebration of the 50th World Day of Peace. The event was held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and was sponsored by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to the United Nations. The theme for Pope Francis' annual World Day of Peace message for 2017 was: “Non-Violence: a Style of Politics for Peace.”

On Wednesday, March 8th, the Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players will host its second Masterclass session titled “Broadway Dance Masterclass with Jolene Baldini” in the Mater Dei Prep dance studio. The Seraph Players along with 7th and 8th grade students from St. Mary Elementary School will have the opportunity to receive private dance instruction from renowned dance teacher Jolene Baldini.
On Saturday, February 25, Mater Dei Prep senior, Nicole Cleary was awarded “The Scholastic Art & Writing Award” for her excellence in writing. Out of the record-breaking 320,000 works that were submitted, Nicole’s writing portfolio was chosen to be awarded this prestigious honor. Through her hard work and dedication Nicole joined the legacy of Awards’ alumni including Stephen King, Sylvia Plath, Zac Posen, Andy Warhol and more.

On Thursday, February 16, 2017, ten members from the Mater Dei Prep Emerging Global Leaders Program attended the DPI/NGO Education for Global Citizenship Conference and the International Day of Peace Planning Conference at the United Nations. Peace ambassadors from all over the world met at these prestigious conferences to create a more sustainable planet through effective leadership and begin planning the upcoming International Day of Peace in September.
On Saturday, February 11, 2017, Mater Dei Prep was honored to dedicate the current chapel on campus to the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity in Stella Niagara, New York, for their thirty five years (1961-1996) of service to Mater Dei Prep. The chapel previously went by the name of The Chapel but will now be called the “St. Francis Chapel”. A plaque listing the names of all the Sisters of St. Francis who served the school was presented at the ceremony and will hang proudly in the St. Francis Chapel.
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Mater Dei Prep (MDP) held its signature fundraising event, the Seraph Strong Gala, at Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury. The sold-out event honored James Shaw (MD ’76), for his unflagging dedication to the school and featured cocktails and dinner, entertainment by The Trend, and a gift auction.
On Wednesday, February 8th, the Seraph community was excited to welcome over 200 attendees to the Class of 2021 Accepted Students Night. The pre-game reception / pep rally included food, music, games and conversation with the faculty, staff and future classmates. All accepted students received a limited edition "Stage Crew" t-shirt to wear as they joined current Mater Dei Prep students cheer on the mens' basketball team vs. St. Rose.
On Wednesday, February 8, the Seraph Players of Mater Dei Prep will find themselves in the company of one of London West End’s leading ladies. Deborah Dutcher, who originated the role of Cosette in Les Miserable, in both Germany and Belgium, and played the iconic role of Christine in Phantom of the Opera in London’s West End, will hold a Masterclass entitled, “Acting thru Song, A Masterclass with Deborah Dutcher”.

Becoming mayor might not seem like a natural point along the career path of a nurse. But Mater Dei alumna Susan Raine Kiley (’72) learned about service and civic duty at a young age and sees both “nurse” and “mayor” as just two of the many ways of giving back to a community.

Mater Dei Prep is proud to announce that Mr. George Anthony, Mater Dei Prep faculty member and the head of the “Emerging Global Leaders Program,” has been appointed as the new Primary UN DPI Representative of Pathways To Peace.
On Saturday, Feb. 11, Mater Dei Prep will hold its signature fundraising event, the Seraph Strong Gala, at Shadowbrook in Shrewsbury. The annual event typically raises almost $75,000, with the money used to enhance academic programs and facilities at the school.
Robert Lynch, a senior at Mater Dei Prep, has been a valuable member of the Seraph community since he first walked the halls of Mater Dei Prep his freshman year. He has participated in countless food, coat, and toy drives since he was a young boy and was instrumental in Mater Dei Prep’s efforts to collect 2,500 pounds of food for the Students Change Hunger Food Challenge.
