“Faith is the substance of all things……” Hebrews 11: 1
Mater Dei Prep fosters a climate of appreciation for faith and spiritual values and offers its students encouragement and hope in their personal journey of faith. Mater Dei Prep’s spirit of community is strengthened by coming together to celebrate our faith and reliance on God. Students have countless opportunities throughout the school year to nurture their spirituality and to experience the joys and responsibilities of helping others by sharing their talents and time.
Each year a day is set aside for every class to explore faith-based themes. These days of recollection are planned and run by students working under the guidance of the Campus Minister.
For many students, the highlight of their faith formation experience at Mater Dei Prep comes during Kairos, a four day/three night spiritual retreat for students in their senior year. Kairos is a unique faith formation experience where senior students have an intense and extremely personal encounter with God. Guided by a priest and led by their peers, students examine their role in God’s community.
The campus minister is available for counseling whenever a student feels the need. He offers perspective and guidance on matters of faith and supports Mater Dei Prep’s students through any challenges in their faith formation journey.
Christian Service is an integral part of the Mater Dei Prep experience. With a course in Christian Service and a Community Service club, service permeates our school culture. The Student Advisory Board runs food, clothing, Christmas toy, and Easter candy drives throughout the year. Campus Ministry assists in coordination of these activities. In addition, Campus Ministry provides opportunities for “hands on” work in soup kitchens, after-care programs, nursing homes and food banks.
On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Mater Dei Prep continued the tradition of hosting Heavenly Hope Fun Day, a student-run service program for children and young adults with special needs. The project, begun in 2012 by then Mater Dei Prep junior Taralynn Vecchio (MDP ’13), gives the participants a break from their regular routine with a whole day of fun games and activities while bonding with Mater Dei Prep students.
On Thursday, March 16, 2017, senior Jennifer Quigley received the Monmouth County Guidance Directors’ Caring Award. Jennifer was nominated to represent Mater Dei Prep by Director of Student Services, Mr. Phil Masterson, for showing exceptional caring and compassion for a cause, group, or program during her high school career. The ceremony took place at Brookdale Community College with other recipients from public and private schools throughout Monmouth County.
