Mater Dei Prep Remembers Victims of 9/11 at Convocation Ceremony

On Tuesday, September 11 Mater Dei Prep continued the convocation ceremony tradition by welcoming over 300 Seraph students back for the upcoming school year. Convocation, the Latin word for “calling together” brought all the Mater Dei Prep students and faculty together as a community to learn about the new exciting academic and extra-curricular options available to them.

This year Mater Dei Prep students have the opportunity to participate in four new academic programs – the Global Leaders Institute, Information Technology Institute, Performing Arts Institute and the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute. For the 2018-2019 school year approximately 180 students registered for the Emergency Medical Services and Nursing Institute, 140 students registered for the Information Technology Institute, 50 students registered for the Global Leaders Institute, and 50 students registered for the Performing Arts Institute.

Following the convocation ceremony, Mr. Don Galante, President of Mater Dei Prep, spoke to students and faculty about the tragic events of September 11, 2001. President Galante asked all the students to bow their head in silence in memory of those who died, including the 37 members of Middletown and 147 residents of Monmouth County.

President Galante shared his experiences from the tragic day 17 years ago and had a completely silent room as he explained his escape with fellow coworkers and pedestrians from his office on the 25th floor of the World Financial Center. He also discussed how complete strangers banded together to help one another during this tragic time. President Galante said he was proud to be an American and see “Americans helping Americans.”

President Galante stressed the importance of “being the change in the world” to students and to “never take any day for granted.” He also urged students to never say “I should have” and to “work together as a community to make the world a better place.”

To conclude the event, all Mater Dei Prep students received portable phone chargers from faculty and staff in case their phone ever died during an emergency situation and they needed to contact their families.
