Mater Dei Prep Proudly Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2018 Inductees
Mater Dei Prep (MDP) and the Mater Dei Prep Alumni Association are proud to announce this year’s inductees to the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame. The Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame honors members of the Seraph community for their extraordinary co-curricular accomplishments, distinguished achievement in their respective fields, extraordinary service and support of their alma mater, and team state championships. All nominations are reviewed by the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee and final honoree selections are made by the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame Committee. The Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be honored on Friday, September 21, 2018 at the Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck, New Jersey.
The Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame Class of 2018 includes nine deserving individuals and one school championship team. This year the inductees represent alumni from the class of 1972 to 2008 and honorable community volunteers. John Cahill MDP’73, President of the Mater Dei Prep Alumni Association, is particularly proud of the inclusive and deliberate process that yielded such a distinguished list of honorees.
“Each year the list of Hall of Fame nominees is more prolific and extraordinary. It is clear that Mater Dei Prep is developing world class alumni and volunteers with an inspirational ability to lead, succeed, and serve their community. I am particularly proud of this year’s class of honorees and our commitment to recognize the myriad accomplishments of our alumni and volunteers in the arts, athletics, their professional fields, and service to the community. We are confident this year’s list of deserving honorees could be double the size and will continue to grow exponentially in the future,” said John Cahill MDP’73.
Mater Dei Prep is proud to congratulate the individuals listed below on their induction into the Mater Dei Prep Hall of Fame.
Cindy Dwyer: Mrs. Cindy Dwyer is an award winning director and musical editor that has been teaching music and drama at Mater Dei Prep for the past 25 years. Mrs. Dwyer studied at Butler University, Montclair State University, and Georgian Court University. She has multiple award winning shows out of the thirty-nine productions she has directed at Mater Dei Prep. Cindy is the head of the newly established Mater Dei Prep Performing Arts Institute and recipient of the 2018 Basie Award for Outstanding Direction in a Musical. The 2010-2011 production of the Drowsy Chaperone included some of Cindy’s best work. The show earned 15 Basie nominations with 5 outright winners. This past spring, the Mater Dei Prep Seraph Players were ecstatic to learn that they were awarded 7 Basie Awards out of a leading 16 nominations for their 2018 production of Les Misérables.
Ryan Lino MDP’07: Ryan Lino was the valedictorian of his class and the Student Advisory Board President. He distinguished himself on and off the athletic fields at Mater Dei Prep and Johns Hopkins University. Ryan was a three sport athlete in high school and a two sport captain in college. At Johns Hopkins University, Ryan was a four-year letterman and captain of the football team. He was an all-conference offensive lineman and a first team all-district Academic All-American nominee. Ryan also participated on the track and field team for four years and was selected as captain his senior year. Ryan is currently Vice President of Financial Sponsors Group at JP Morgan where he advises private equity principals on their wealth management needs on both a brokerage and discretionary basis and provides trade execution for leading private equity firms.
Donald E. Froude MDP’74 – Lifetime Achievement: Don Froude was an executive leadership team member and President of the Personal Advisors Group at Ameriprise Financial where he was responsible for the practice growth of over 9,700 financial professionals generating more than $3.3 billion in revenue and $350 billion in assets under management. Don has over 35 years of industry experience beginning with nine years as an advisor and office manager at Bache Halsey Stuart/Prudential followed by ten years at Alex Brown/Bankers Trust/Deutsche Bank where he served in multiple leadership roles culminating in his position as Managing Director of the Private Client Division. Don served as President and CEO of Quick & Reilly until 2006 then moved into the role of President, Bank of America/Columbia Management Distributors. He joined Legg Mason from 2006-2008 where he served as Managing Director/Head of U.S. Distribution and later joined Ameriprise Financial in 2008. He is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross. Don currently advises the Mater Dei Prep Alumni Association and has made Mater Dei Prep a top philanthropic interest.
Dr. Joseph Buzzanco MDP ’78 P’13,’16 –Maria Buzzanco P’13,’16 – Extraordinary Service: Dr. Joe and Maria Buzzanco campaign tirelessly for Mater Dei Prep. Their advocacy for her cause and mission is well known throughout the extended community. Dr. Buzzanco has always been involved in the St. Mary’s community and graduated from St. Mary Elementary School in 1974 and Mater Dei Prep in 1978. Joe received his undergraduate degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University and later attended Rutgers Medical School. He received his D.M.D. from Rutgers Medical School and has been practicing dentistry in Red Bank for the past 31 years. Joe and Maria together manage one of the most successful and well-renowned dental offices in Monmouth County.
Maria Buzzanco, while not an alumnus of Mater Dei Prep, joined her husband in support of his alma mater when their daughter Brianna attended Mater Dei Prep in 2010. Maria has been an avid supporter of the school for the past eight years. She has been a leader of the parent association and served as the Events Chair on the PTO and Chair of the Board of Trustee Development Committee. Joe was a member of the Board of Governors prior to the Save the Seraphs Campaign and both Maria and Joe were members of the advisory board to keep the school open. At a time when the very existence of the school was in question, Joe and Maria stepped in with a handful of others to take on a leadership role in preserving the legacy and ensuring the financial future of Mater Dei Prep.
Cathy Daniels MDP’79 –Extraordinary Service: Cathy Daniels currently serves as the Senior Manager of Internal Events and Alumni Relations at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, one of the world’s premier corporate law firms. Prior to Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, she was the Marketing and Business Development Supervisor at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. She began her career in alumni relations and development while working at Seton Hall University as the Director of Alumni Programs. She eventually advanced to the Seton Hall Law School where she was named Assistant Dean for Alumni and Development.
Cathy has been an integral part of the planning and execution of countless Mater Dei Prep alumni events and programming for the past several decades. She has been instrumental in reaching out to Mater Dei Prep alumni and encouraging their involvement with the school and attendance at events. She has also served, pro bono, as “de facto” Director of Development when the school has needed her. Cathy has been an invaluable resource to the Alumni and Development Office with her extensive knowledge of the Mater Dei Prep community. She was pivotal in creating school policies and procedures Mater Dei Prep still has today. Her loyalty and commitment to her alma mater are second to none and the Alumni Association would not be where it is today without her tireless efforts and continued support.
Kathryn McLaughlin MDP’72 –Extraordinary Service: Kathryn A. McLaughlin is a founding partner of McLaughlin & Wilshinsky, P.C. Her principal practice areas include commercial and residential real estate, matrimonial and family law, business and employment law, and probate and estate planning. Among other volunteer and community activities, Ms. McLaughlin formerly served on the Board of Trustees of Mater Dei Prep. Ms. McLaughlin is a volunteer coach with the Thurgood Marshall Junior Mock Trial Program, a competitive program for New York City grade school students. She was also privileged to render pro-bono legal representation in multiple probate and guardianship matters to families affected by the September 11th tragedy.
When it was time to step-up and “Save the Seraphs,” Kathy McLaughlin responded to the call immediately. She brought invaluable skills to the table and was one of the original founding (6) Board of Trustee members of the new Mater Dei Prep and was recruited to Chair the Academic Development & Student Affairs Committee (ADSAC). Kathy was pivotal in creating school policies and procedures Mater Dei Prep still has today and is serving as the Women's Leadership Committee Chair.
Ellen Poole MDP’72 –Extraordinary Service: Ellen Poole spent her 34-year career in Accounting and Financial Management at Engelhard Corporation (acquired by BASF Corporation). Ms. Poole held various positions in accounting, financial systems implementations, business re-engineering and process improvements and business unit controlling. Her most recent position was Controller of Mobile Emissions Catalysts and was responsible for global business unit financial management that included budgeting, strategic and investment planning, acquisitions and divestitures. She attended Seton Hall University where she earned her BS in Accounting and MBA in Finance.
Ellen has been a faithful volunteer at Mater Dei Prep for the past 20 years. She joined the Alumni Association in 2008 and currently serves as treasurer. Ellen has served faithfully on the Hall of Fame Committee and has been crucial to the planning and execution of the Annual Golf Outing and Picnic at Monmouth Park. In 2015, Ellen was a member of the leadership steering committee to Save the Seraphs and has been a pillar in the foundation of the successful transition of Mater Dei Prep as an Independent School. Serving as the treasurer of the original (6) members of the Mater Dei Prep Board of Trustees, Ellen has been a valuable leadership volunteer assuring the success of the school. Ellen is also the Chair of the Board of Trustee Finance Committee.
Bill Dickinson P’77,’78,’81,’83,’84,’86: Bill Dickinson has been part of the Mater Dei Prep family since 1973. He was a highly respected member of the coaching staff for the better part of 40 years - assisting with football, baseball, and softball. All six of Coach Dickinson's children attended Mater Dei Prep and his love for his alma mater was arguably second to none. For Coach Dickinson, the Mater Dei Prep family was truly his family and for many alumni he was a father figure, mentor, and role model. Largely due to his generosity of spirit, there are many alumni who would testify to the extraordinary effect he had on their lives. He was generous with his praise and support and the warmth of his personality left an indelible imprint on the lives of decades of students at Mater Dei Prep. He is cherished by the Mater Dei Prep community and among the most appreciated and influential members of the faculty and staff in Mater Dei Prep history.
2008 Mater Dei Prep State Championship Varsity Softball Team: In the spring of 2008 Mater Dei Prep fielded a softball team that would make school history. The sixteen girls on the roster were one family on the diamond and nothing would come between them. The season began in a horrible rain storm vs Shore Regional that Mater Dei Prep won 6-5 by scoring five runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. That was the beginning of the “Magical Season.” The team went on to tie for the Shore Conference B Central Division Title and made it to the Monmouth County Tournament Final.
The State Championship Tournament began with an extra inning 2-1 victory over Holy Cross followed by a 10-0 victory over Cardinal McCarrick to put Mater Dei Prep in the Non-Public B South Championship game against St. Joe’s of Hammonton. After defeating St. Joe’s of Hammonton the Seraphs were crowned Non-Public B South State Champions. The Seraphs then traveled to Trenton in search of their first State Championship and had to play in 100 degree weather. After battling another state powerhouse, Montclair Kimberly Academy, the Seraphs went on to win their first Non-Public B State Title!
