Mater Dei Prep alumus, Dwight Sheehan ’11, hosted the 1st Annual DES Fight Softball Game at Mater Dei on August 11th. The event raised $1,800 and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA). NACoA is the only national membership organization focusing on the children of parents struggling with alcohol or substance abuse and offers numerous resources for parents, children, and caregivers as well as professionals.
Dwight resides in Middletown, NJ and currently works as a paraprofessional for the Middletown Board of Education in the middle school behavioral disabilities program. He also recently opened his own personal training business, DES Fitness & Performance LLC.
Upon asking Dwight why he chose the National Association for Children of Addiction (NACoA) as his charity of choice he explained that “it strikes extremely close to home for me. I can relate to every single one of those children who are raised in the kind of environment they are currently living.” He emphasized that he is passionate about helping this organization and bringing awareness to the cause. His personal thoughts on addiction are that “it is a disease and can be absolutely disastrous. However, I know that there are countless people who wake up each day that are survivors of either a drug or alcohol addiction. There are programs and outlets available at your disposal to receive the help you need.”
Creating an event that gets people involved to help this cause is something commendable and thoughtful. Dwight stated the meaning of DES fight is “my attempt to fight against addiction. DES stands for Desire, Energy, Success. These three words simply sum up everything for me. Desire is a sense of longing or hoping for an outcome. You need to have a burning desire to want to achieve this particular outcome. All of us have goals and dreams and it is with this burning desire that we can achieve them. Energy is the strength and vitality required for sustained physical or mental activity. Each day you need to wake up with an energy that no one else can top. You need to be the person who brings unparalleled energy to every aspect of your life. Success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. At the end of the road, with both desire and energy, you will find success. No matter what your goal is, if you face each day with a high level of desire and energy, you will be successful.”
