The Brad Cahill Memorial Scholarship was established by Mater Dei Prep in 2017 to honor the life of Brad Cahill (’89). This fall Brad was inducted posthumously into the Mater Dei Hall of Fame, 25 years after he passed away.
Brad Cahill was a standout soccer player his entire life. He started his career at St. Mary's Elementary School and moved on to Mater Dei High School.  In his junior season, Brad was named to the coaches' All-Monmouth County second team. His senior season was filled with honors: Brad scored 44 points, besting a contingent of tough players from other schools; garnered all-state honorable-mention honors for private and parochial schools; and played in the NJSIAA Parochial B tournament. He finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in Mater Dei history. He continued to play the game he loved during his college career at Belmont Abbey in North Carolina until he was diagnosed with cancer in 1991.
While Brad’s life was tragically cut short, he lived more during his 21 years on earth than many could hope to live in 100 years.  Brad’s spirit and memories live on in his family and friends. His athletic achievements are still among the finest the Mater Dei boys’ soccer program has ever known.
Brad stayed in school until the second semester of his sophomore year, when the disease became too difficult to manage. He was admitted to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York in the summer of 1992. On Sept. 24, 1992, at the age of 21, Brad passed away at his home in Middletown.
The death of a young athlete is a tragedy. In most cases the athlete is lauded and mourned, but then fades into memory. Brad Cahill is missed, but will never be forgotten within this community. He was a great person with great athletic ability which he displayed on the soccer field. Brad is a great example of a person who future student-athletes should look to emulate in school and on the playing field. He will live on in spirit and, through this scholarship which bears his name, create opportunities for many others in the future to receive the life-changing benefit of a Mater Dei Prep education.
