Middletown- To say this year’s group of the Lady Seraphs Soccer team is playing with a chip on their shoulder is an understatement. After being shutdown for two weeks due to COVID19 the Mater Dei Prep Lady Seraphs soccer team is off to a 2-0 start, their best start to the first week of the season since 2013 where that group started 3-1.

The Seraphs have opened their season with two straight wins over Ranney high school with wins of 6-2 and 3-0. In their season opener Mater Dei Prep led Ranney 2-1 at the half behind goals from senior midfielder Mackenzie Urban on assist from junior midfielder Kate Braun and the second goal from Braun on assist from sophomore forward Delaney Urban. In the second half, the Seraphs came out fast and never looked back with goals from Delaney assisted by Braun, Mackenzie unassisted, Braun from Luchina and Luchina from Delaney to pull away from the Panthers to a 6-2 win. With the win, sophomore goalie Gabriella Giaramita earned her first high school win with 14 saves.

A game that took nearly two weeks to happen due to their shutdown and rain outs, finally came on a beautiful Monday afternoon at home in their second game of the season and their Senior Night. This group of eight seniors that consists of Mackenzie Urban, Olivia Szotak, Bridgette Sullivan, Nora Stewart, Sophia Jensen, Lara Gritzek, Brooke Luchina and Harley Parson have come a long way since the freshman year. In 2017 they went 0-13 with only 3 goals for. In 2018 they went 6-11 with 20 goals for. In 2019 they went 6-14 with 43 goals for and got back into the NJSIAA Non-Public B South Jersey tournament.

This year the spirits, dedication and focus are extremely high for the Lady Seraphs as they look to match the 2013 state finalists and 2014 semi-finalist teams with their own NJSIAA playoff push, especially in a shortened NJSIAA tournament season due to COVID19 that could consist of just three tournament games to determine a state champion.

The Senior game ended with a 3-0 win over Ranney for the second win of the season for Mater Dei Prep. Braun recorded her first career high school hat-trick with one goal in the first half and two in the second half. Giaramita earned her second win of the season in net and her first high school shutout with 8 saves.

Middletown- The Mater Dei Prep boys’ soccer season has gotten off to a rough start after expectations were running high. This year’s group which is led by seven seniors Christopher Braun, Liam Stewart, Christian Szotak, Jeremy Ramos, Danny Palmer, Brendan Golding and Marcone Pessoa are looking to go out with a winning record during the Covid-19 shortened season.

The Seraphs picked 5th in B Central opened with a disappointing 5-1 loss to top seeded Ranney on Opening Day. After an evenly played first half where Mater Dei Prep scored first off a corner from senior defender Jeremy Ramos to senior midfielder Christian Szotak and then conceded two goals to Ranney midway through the first half before heading into the break trailing 2-1. The second half Ranney started fast and never let up, scoring four second half goals for the 5-1 win. Senior goalie Christopher Braun kept the Seraphs in the game with 17 saves but there was just too much firepower from the Panthers.

Two Days later the Seraphs Senior Day, there was a different Mater Dei Prep team that took to the field. The boys came out working hard and together and battled Ranney to a 0-0 tie at halftime. After the Seniors were honored at halftime the two teams battle back and forth for the next forty minutes before the Panthers walked out of Middletown with a 2-1 win. Ranney scored midway through the second half and Mater Dei Prep answered on a pass down the right side from junior forward Zach O’Neal to junior midfielder Johnny Contini. The Panthers would grab the 2-1 lead with 13 minutes remaining beating the defense and senior keeper Braun who ended with 8 saves on the day.

MIDDLETOWN – As the seasons change and a sense of normalcy starts to creep back into high school athletics, the Mater Dei Prep football program battled through another rough first half and downed the Lions in the second half Friday night 28-17 at Middletown North High School.

With the Seraphs clinging to a 7-3 lead coming out of the half, senior kick returner Kody Gibbs took the second half kickoff 72-yard for the score to give Mater Dei Prep a 13-3 lead and kicker Jake Jacobson added the extra point for a 14-3 lead.

The Seraphs air attacked showed flashes of what they have been waiting for from junior Alex Brown, but for the second straight game the quarterback was forced out of the pocket and into incompletions or minimal ground yardage.  Brown did find junior tightend Tafari Thompson late in the third quarter with a 11-yard touchdown strike up the middle to increase their lead to 21-3 after Jacobson’s extra point.

Mater Dei Prep got back to their programs strengths, leaning on their power running game which was led by junior running back Ra’Jahn Cooper.  Cooper led the rushing attack against the Lions with 113 total yards and 2 touchdowns, the latter coming late in the fourth quarter putting the Seraphs up 28-17 following the Jacobson’s extra point, to seal the win for Mater Dei Prep.
