Head Coach Will Carl is no stranger to Mater Dei Prep Athletics, he is the Boys’ Soccer Head Coach in the fall and has gotten to know many of our Seraph students. We now welcome him to the head coach position for our boys and girls Track and Field teams for the Winter and Spring seasons. Coach Carl has a BA in Biology from Kean University and served eight years in the United States Marine Corps. He also has a Performance Enhancement Specialization from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and a USSF “D” coaching license. He has coached and trained athletes for 17 years, many having gone on to play in college or serve in the military. Coach Carl strives to encourage athletes to learn and develop both on and off the field through pride, purpose, and passion. He looks for a student-athlete that is hardworking, dedicated and always willing to help others succeed and grow. He “hopes to win the division and make a lasting impact in states.”

Conor Lunny joins the team as Assistant Coach for this season and is a local. He has lived in Middletown his whole life and is the youngest of four, all of who attended Saint Mary Elementary School. An interesting fact is that Conor’s dad was the Cross Country and Track Coach at SMS for 10+ years. Conor attended Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, and was a 4-year varsity member of the Track and Field team as a middle-distance runner. Upon graduating high school, he attended Bucknell University in Lewisburg, PA and was a 2-year varsity member of Track and Field team followed by 3 years as Manager of Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams. He is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. Coach Lunny is looking to maximize the potential of each and every student-athlete as well as build a sustainable program, an instilled mentality that team is prioritized over individual. He stated that, “every day has a purpose, no matter how easy or hard it may be.” He looks for committed and hard-working athletes because those qualities are truly valuable and rare. Coach Lunny hopes to have a great season and give our senior student-athletes the best experience possible as they finish out their high school careers. He is joining the MDP Track and Field coaching staff with the motivation to help all student-athletes reach their goals, exceed them, and to help them grow not only as an athlete but also as a person.

Bryan Scotton will also serve as an Assistant Coach for the boys and girls Track and Field teams this season! He has a Bachelors in Music Education from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and a Masters in Divinity from Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is currently a religion teacher at Mater Dei Prep and the head of Campus Ministry.  He enjoys running recreationally and has competed in both Track and Cross Country events in the recent past. The most important quality he looks for in an athlete is teamwork. He says, “the team is only as good as its individual members, and its individual members are only as good as the way they treat each other.” He is looking for a cohesive group that builds each other up; healthy competition can be taught and achieved, resulting in tremendous accomplishments. Some of Coach Scotton’s goals for this season are to really prepare the team for what the spring will bring, and to work with the other coaches to make sure the student-athletes can persevere despite the unique challenges that this season may present. He is looking forward to this new adventure and challenge at MDP.

Congratulations to this new coaching staff for our boys and girls Track and Field teams, best of luck this season! Go Seraphs!
