Alumna and 2019 Track and Field Hall of Fame inductee, Dr. Laura Catanzaro ’12, held the athletic screenings for the student-athletes to bring awareness to injury prevention. Laura is a licensed Physical Therapist with Kessler and was inspired by her time as a student-athlete at Mater Dei Prep. We were honored to have her back to help our current student-athletes succeed as she did.
The screening included the use of Performance Health System, Fusionetics, which helps identify any risk of injury and suggests ways to decrease the chances of getting hurt while maintaining athletic performance. Each athlete had a one-on-one analysis and conversation with a physical therapist based on their individual score.
Laura emphasized that adolescent athletes need to use caution when playing their sport due to the high risk of injuries that can be caused by many things. Since Laura was an athlete herself, she wanted to see the best in our athletes and help them excel and succeed for their upcoming season which is why she wanted to bring these screenings to our student-athletes. “It was great to be back at my alma mater as I once told the late Mr. Attridge, I would be back here to help in someway. I am looking forward to seeing where this goes and hopefully we can get the girls to participate in a program to prevent injury and get them stronger for their sporting events.”
The feedback from the girls’ basketball team was great and they appreciated the time each PT took to talk with them and improve their form. “We are always looking for new ways to limit injuries throughout the season and make the girls even stronger on the court, so this seemed like a good opportunity for our basketball team," said Mike Pineiro, MDP Girls Basketball Head Coach.
Holding athletic screenings is important if our athletes wish to pursue a collegiate-level athletic career. The physical therapists educated the team on the importance of self-correction and self-awareness for potential injuries and stopping them before they can happen. The PT’s recommended incorporating specific conditioning and corrective exercises throughout their season based on this system.
Mater Dei Prep greatly appreciates the time Kessler Rehabilitation Center took to teach our students and we want to thank Dr. Laura Catanzaro for bringing this to the school! Also thank you to the additional physical therapists, Ryan Gutierrez, PT (Center Manager at Middletown Kessler) and Dr. Christopher Kerscher PT, DPT (Center Manager of Brick 88 Center) for coming to MDP!
