Capstone Academy

Capstone Academy Mission:
The mission of the Mater Dei Prep Capstone Academy Program is to nurture the inherent talents of Capstone students and to expand their interests and skills through challenging and innovative activities and educational opportunities.  Our hope is to mold these already top-tier students into “Renaissance Students,” able to think critically, act compassionately, and compete successfully in college and beyond.

The Mater Dei Prep Capstone Academy Program is comprised of a select group of top-tier students who meet regularly to expand their interests and skills through challenging and innovative activities and educational opportunities.  Students in the program innovate and implement projects, report on their activities, engage in community service, and attend a travel program abroad.

Each year, incoming freshman applicants to Mater Dei Prep with high academic achievement in middle school are asked to apply for the Capstone Academy program. Through an essay, teacher recommendations, and an interview with representatives of each department at Mater Dei Prep, five students are chosen to join the program. A stipend for tuition and activities is offered, and students are required to maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA and attend all activities of the program in order to remain a member of Capstone.

Students participate in four activities per year, one in each of the four marking periods. Based on a yearly overarching theme, students get the opportunity to experience a wide variety of offerings. Past activities have included visiting a hydroelectric dam site, touring the University of Delaware, planning and building a Monarch butterfly garden, learning about fluorescent minerals at a mining museum, seeing Blue Man Group, and hand crafting face jugs with a local potter.

In addition, larger trips are planned to leadership summits around the world. In 2015, Capstone student Greg Bender attended the Global Student Leaders Summit in Costa Rica and learned about turtle rescue on the island of Tortuguero. This year, students in the Capstone Academy will attend the Leaders Summit in Lima, Peru and will also do service work in the Sacred Valley, helping to build a women’s knitting cooperative.

International travel is not mandatory for Capstone students, but they may apply their yearly activity stipend toward costs of the trip.

Students applying for the Capstone Academy must be entering the Class of 2023 and have previously completed their Mater Dei Prep application.  Completed applications must be submitted by November 28.
